Nikon Z6III and Z8 to Get New Shutter Angle Mode
Here’s what you need to know about the latest firmware updates for these two Nikon mirrorless cameras and how they should add to your photo and video workflows.

Two of Nikon’s most popular and powerful hybrid photo and video cameras are about to get a pretty significant boost with some new firmware updates. The Nikon Z6III has proven to be a highly capable video powerhouse with its 24.5MP CMOS sensor and 6K at 60fps N-RAW video.
However, some features and functions are missing from these cameras that astute filmmakers and content creators might be interested in adding.
The biggest being a new shutter angle mode coming to both cameras that will let shooters apply their desired motion blur without needing to manually change shutter speeds every time the frame rate is changed—something that should save time and produce some nice, stylized images.
So, if you’re a Nikon Z6III or Z8 owner, renter, or interested party, let’s look at what firmware update 1.10 for the Z6III and firmware update 2.10 for the Z8 will add to these cameras’ photo and video capabilities.
Nikon Z6III Firmware Version 1.10
Designed to help meet the demands and standards of professional videography, this new firmware update should give a nice boost to the already powerful Nikon Z6III. Along with the sensor and high-end recording specs listed above, the Z6III is notable for its other 4K at 120p and Full HD 240p Slow Motion Video capabilities.
Plus, as a flagship-level camera that currently retails for only $2,200, it’s about as competitive of a deal as any mirrorless camera with a video focus can be these days. Still, these firmware updates should give it some expanded functionality with the following additions coming with firmware version 1.10.
- Hi-Res Zoom is now available when the image area is set to “DX”.
- New shutter angle mode grants users the ability to apply their desired motion blur without changing shutter speeds every time the frame rate is changed.
- Customizable brightness information display allows adjustments of the histogram and waveform displays as well as the color of the zebra pattern display.

Nikon Z8 Firmware Version 2.10
Similar to the Z6III in terms of its video-focused design and relatively low price point, the Z8 is even more of a powerhouse with a huge 45.7MP FX-Format Stacked CMOS sensor that is capable of recording up to 8.3K at 60fps N-RAW, as well as at 4.1K 60p ProRes RAW.
Those are some pretty killer video specs for a camera that is currently retailing for less than $3,500. The Z8 is proving to be popular with video professionals and hybrid creators of all types, but—again—it could use a boost. Similar to the Z6III updates, the Z8 will get the following additions with firmware update version 2.10.
