Steve Martin’s Comedy Masterclass: 'When the Word F*ck Gets the Laughs, Question It'

Steve Martin
Steve Martin offers 50 years of industry insights in 25 video lessons.

The Jerk. Three Amigos. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. These are pillars of American comedy on film. And now the face of those classics has a new role—Steve Martin is teaching his first-ever online course.

With Martin’s course on comedy, Masterclass continues its impressive wave of bringing top-level industry expertise to the masses at an affordable $90. Last year, the company rolled out master classes with screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, documentary filmmaker Werner Herzog, composer Hans Zimmer, and TV producer Shonda Rhimes.

The course description states that it will help you "find your voice, gather material, develop an act, and take your comedy to the next level." Though it seems geared toward stand-up comedians, any comedy screenwriter or director can learn from Martin’s signature style, which deftly blends high-brow and low-brow comedy—often with a tinge of darkness—into an audience-pleasing concoction.

The course comes with 25 video lessons, a workbook, and the opportunity to potentially get your work critiqued by Martin himself. You can pre-enroll here and get notified when the course launches later this spring.

Steve Martin is one of the funniest people out there. I don't like cheaply using swear words to get the laugh. I will say in Little Miss Sunshine when Paul Dano screamed "FUUUUUUUU*K" in total agony I laughed real hard. It worked perfectly for the scene. He had been keeping his mouth shut for the whole film and that was his breaking point. I feel like there are uses for it. It's definitely overdone in comedy. I can't wait to take this course!

They're so good! Is there a way to put up a survey on who should make a masterclass next? Like who would be the best teacher for Cinematography? Or best teacher for Production Design?
