File this one in the ol’ “WTF” bucket, which we’ve saved for other odd camera phones and confusing partnerships: the AI device company Honor has announced that its new AI-powered “robot phone,” developed in partnership with ARRI, is set to release later this summer.

And while we still don’t know a lot about this phone, including what exactly the company means by calling it a “robot phone” as well as everything it might offer for filmmakers, videographers, or AI-friendly content creators, we do know a bit more than before.

Honor x ARRI Robot Phone

As we covered when it was first announced a few months ago, the Honor Robot Phone is the direct result of a strategic partnership between ARRI and the AI device company. A partnership that aims to bring ARRI’s cinematic standards and professional workflows into the world of mobile imaging.

The flagship product for this partnership appears to be the new Robot Phone, which now has a landing page and a teaser video with over a million views so far. But, besides what we get from the teaser, some images, and your standard promises of excellence, what does this new robot cinema phone actually have to offer?

What We Know So Far

From the landing page for the Honor Robot Phone, we do have some details to share, including the news that the Honor Robot Phone will indeed be a gimbal-type system with four-degrees-of-freedom (4DoF), as the company calls it, that will be powered by the industry’s smallest micro motor, making it appear like it will be a quite-tiny, almost-attachable, camera mounted on the smartphone.

The Honor Robot Phone will also feature “robot-grade” motion controls, enabling it to provide a broader field of view and a 3-axis gimbal system for its imaging stabilization. It will also feature AI capabilities and interactions that provide rapid responses and instant feedback as part of its AI-trained intelligent subject tracking.

Price and Availability

And that's about all we know so far. We also don’t know a potential price point just yet. But it does sound like the Honor Robot Phone will be released later this summer or early this fall. Which hopefully means we’ll have more details to share on this odd, yet intriguing, robot phone here soon.
