If you follow the RED Digital Cinema YouTube channel, you might have already seen this news. The latest RED TECH episode is out, and it announces that the V-RAPTOR XE is officially part of the RED arsenal.

Built on RED’s DSMC3 platform, the V-RAPTOR XE features a powerful, large-format VV sensor packed into a lightweight body that is capable of capturing 8K video in up to 60fps with 17+ stops of dynamic range.

A welcome part of the RED arsenal that now ranges from the compact KOMODO-X to the powerhouse V-RAPTOR XL. Here’s everything you need to know about this announcement.

RED V-RAPTOR XE Added to RED Arsenal

If you’re looking to invest in buying or renting a RED camera for an upcoming project, you have quite a few high-quality options to choose from. (If you’re looking to go much more affordable, though, you can always check out the Nikon ZR, the first Z cinema camera, which combines the best of RED’s color science with Nikon’s optical expertise.)

In the same RED TECH video, the team breaks down the choices for picking the right camera for your production comes down to the following four decisions:

  • Sensor type
  • Form factor – How small, light, or built-out does your setup need to be?
  • Lens choices – Which mount gives you the flexibility you need?
  • Production needs – Lightweight rig, high frame rates, or full-blown studio setup?

From there, RED offers many options which range from the compact KOMODO-X to the powerhouse V-RAPTOR XL, and also now includes the V-RAPTOR XE.

RED V-RAPTOR XE

Announced back in September, the RED V-RAPTOR XE has proven to be quite intriguing for indie filmmakers and seasoned video pros alike for many reasons, most notably as a chance to upgrade to 8K large-format global shutter shooting.

The RED V-RAPTOR XE was designed to bring a nice balance between high-end performance and value. The XE omits advanced Global Vision features like Phantom Track and Extended Highlights, but still retains the same image quality, workflow flexibility, and robust connectivity that define RED's V-RAPTOR line.

Interested filmmakers could rest assured that they would benefit from the global shutter, advanced autofocus with face detection, simultaneous ProRes proxy recording, and dual 12G-SDI outputs for discrete monitoring.
