Adding to the mix, though, is a new brand that brings some of the best—and deepest—understanding into this subject matter.
So, we have to pay attention when ARRI joins the film plugin race.
ARRI Film Lab is an OpenFX plugin that will support both ARRI and third-party cameras with flexible licenses for Resolve, Baselight, Nuke, and more. Here’s everything you need to know.
ARRI Film Lab Plugin
Launched by ARRI and presented with a helpful Tech Talk on the ARRI YouTube channel, the company’s Senior Colorist, Florian “Utsi” Martin, gives an in-depth explanation of this new ARRI Film Lab OpenFX plugin.
The demo showcases the many different creative and technical aspects of the plugin and further explains how different settings influence color grading, film aesthetics, and overall image quality.
Adjustable settings
Amongst other features, the ARRI Film Lab will allow shooters to adjust several key features with their footage, including the following settings.
- Film grain: Realistically emulated film grain can be set to the equivalent of a 50D, 200T, or 500T negative stock.
- Color: Color settings encompass different print stock characteristics, reversal film, and bleach bypass.
- Halation: Replicates the red/orange halo around bright areas caused by light reflecting through film layers.
- Gate weave: This setting simulates the slight unsteadiness sometimes seen in footage shot on film.
Price and Availability
The plugin itself is an OFX plugin that can be used with Resolve, Baselight, Nuke, and other programs, with users being able to explore the plugin with a watermark-free trial for seven days after installation. Full licenses are available with different subscription options.
