Following in the footsteps of the Canon EOS C80 and a host of other cameras, Canon has announced that the EOS C50 is the latest camera to be added to Netflix’s prestigious approved camera list.
With the official wording being that the C50 “meets Netflix capture requirements” and that is now “approved for use on Netflix productions,” let’s take a look at the EOS C50 and explore what this highly affordable hybrid cinema camera can bring to the table for your Netflix (or, you know, regular) productions.
Canon C50 Netflix Approved
Designed to help filmmakers (and hybrid content creators) maximize their creative freedom, the Canon EOS C50 is a compact, full-featured hybrid cinema camera that features a 7K full-frame CMOS sensor with 3:2 open gate internal recording capabilities, 4K/120p, and Cinema RAW Light up to 7K/60p video.
Now, officially added to the company’s description, the EOS C50 “meets Netflix capture requirements and has been approved for use on Netflix productions.” The Canon C50 joins a list of other Canon cameras, including the C70, R5 C, C400, and C80, along with many others from Panasonic, Sony, Blackmagic, and others.
From Netflix’s “Cameras & Image Capture: Requirements and Best Practices” page, the capture requirements for Netflix productions include a resolution with a "minimum of 3840 photosite capture width (Spherical),” a codec with “Lightly Compressed or Uncompressed RAW or Intraframe Based Codec with 4:2:2 Chroma-subsampling or Greater,” and a bit depth of “10-Bit or Greater,” amongst some other requirements.

This is notable news for Canon C50 owners, or those who have been curious about the camera in the past. While there aren’t too many of us working on Netflix projects at the moment, it’s a nice indicator that a camera will be usable for high-end projects; you never know, maybe the one that launches your career.
