DJI Drops Ronin 4D Price and Decreases RAW License to Just $1
Internal ProRes RAW recording on the DJI Ronin 4D was $979, now it’s $1—what the heck is going on?

In what is undoubtedly an exciting but kind of bizarre, announcement from DJI, the company is both dropping the retail price of the DJI Ronin 4D by nearly $2,000, as well as decreasing its RAW License price from $979 to $1.
These are huge price drops, with the RAW license drop in particular being quite perplexing. But, hey, at the end of the day, if this helps indie filmmakers and aspiring video professionals out, it’s a win for everyone.
Let’s look at how the DJI Ronin 4D stacks up now with this new price point, explore what you can unlock with this $1 RAW license upgrade, and see if we can figure out just what the heck is going on here.
DJI Ronin 4D Gets a Price Drop
Best known as the camera of choice for recent films and shows like Alex Garland’s Civil War and Adolescence (which used the DJI Ronin 4D for its breathtaking oner), the DJI Ronin 4D is having a bit of a renaissance as of late.
Designed as an all-in-one camera/gimbal solution, the Ronin 4D combines Z-axis (vertical) stabilization built into the X9-6K camera with four-axis gimbal stabilization to create a steady and reliable camera option.
The Ronin 4D offers full-frame capture at rates up to 6K60 in Apple ProRes 422 HQ, which—when combined with the Ronin's CineCore 3.0 image processing system with ACES workflow support—also makes the 4D a nice "B" or 2nd unit camera for larger cine-style productions.
This price drop reduces the cost of the 6K version of the Ronin 4D to just $4,999, a decrease of $1,800, and drops the price of the 8K version to $9,999, a decrease of $2,839. Both prices should make the Ronin 4D that much more competitive in the cinema camera market.
RAW License Price Drop
Along with the price drop to the different models of the Ronin 4D, DJI has also announced that the price of the RAW license, which is required to unlock ProRes RAW video recording on both versions of the Ronin 4D, has been dropped to just $1.
The price was previously $979, which was admittedly a bit high just to unlock a recording feature that you’d think would be included with a camera at either its current or previous price point.
Still, this price drop, while appreciated, is a bit odd. There might be more going on behind the scenes here with different patents and RAW licensing agreements. One dollar is also an odd choice as opposed to just making the recording capabilities available for free in the form of a firmware update.
Still, price drops are always good news. If you’re curious about checking out the DJI Ronin 4D with this new price point and more accessible recording capabilities, the full specs and purchase options are below.
