Here’s Why Your Nikon ZR Might “Rattle” When Not Turned On (And Why It’s a Good Thing)
Recently purchased or rented a Nikon ZR and noticed a “rattling” sound when it's not on? Well, don’t fret. Here’s why it’s a normal occurrence (and actually a good thing).

Nikon ZR Camera Rattle
As we’ve covered quite a bit so far, the Nikon ZR is certainly one of the most anticipated (or at least buzziest) cameras to be released this year. The long-anticipated result of the Nikon acquisition of RED Digital Cinema, the ZR is the de facto child of this marriage as the first camera in a new cinema line that aims to bring the best of its parents' attributes.
The Nikon ZR brings the best of RED’s color science together with Nikon’s engineering to produce a 6K cinema powerhouse that is capable of capturing some truly stunning cinematic images out of a compact and durable camera body.
But, if you’re someone who hasn’t invested in new cameras in some time, or someone unfamiliar with the latest IBIS technologies, then you might notice something odd about the ZR when you first get your hands on it.
Nikon ZR Camera Rattle
If one were to pick up a new Nikon ZR camera for the first time, it’s likely turned off and sans battery. It will also make a noticeable “rattle” sound when moved around in this state. Fret not — those freaking out and searching online for answers!
This is a normal occurrence. The Nikon ZR features a free-floating IBIS sensor that creates this “rattle” sound when the camera is not turned on. When turned on, you’ll notice that the rattle goes away as the sensor locks into place and the stability function is enabled.
It’s unique, yes, but a small price to pay for being able to work with the entire line of NIKKOR Z lenses and a wide range of third-party lenses and lens mount adapters. The ZR is further capable of providing integrated image stabilization with any prime or zoom lens at up to 7.5 stops for smooth and steady image capture.
Nikon ZR Specs and Price Options
We’ll have more to explore regarding the ZR and what it’s fully capable of for filmmaking and videography purposes soon, but figured this might be a helpful note to put out in case anyone was worried or freaking out about this normal, but understandably concerning, instance.
