Nikon’s “Z Cinema” Trademark Fuels RED Replacement Rumors
Nikon has filed an application for a “Z Cinema” trademark. What does that mean for RED?

According to reports online, Nikon has officially filed an application for a “Z Cinema” trademark. Now, this most likely has to do with Nikon's release of the V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount and KOMODO-X Z Mount digital cinema cameras which integrate the Nkon Z mount with these RED cameras.
However, ever since Nikon acquired RED Digital Cinema last year, it does remind us of questions about the future of RED Digital Cinema as a subsidiary of the Nikon Corporation. So, as we're seeing in discussions online, many are wondering if this trademark might secretly pointing to other plans.
Here’s what we know so far.

According to reporting done by Nikon Rumors, an official application for a “Z Cinema” trademark has been applied for by Nikon. Some are suggesting that this might just be a trademark for a new line of cinema lenses, perhaps. Others point out that it's merely referring to the new Z-mount RED cameras.
Here’s an excerpt from the trademark application (which can be found online here):

What’s Next for RED Digital Cinema?
As shared by Nikon reps, the V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount and KOMODO-X Z Mount are the first entries into the all-new Z CINEMA series; a new product line of co-developed solutions from Nikon and RED. This Z CINEMA series is targeted at providing high-quality solutions for the cinema, high-end production and creator market.
Still, we're intrigued by what might come next for Nikon and RED as these two brands further integrate together and scheme up new—and very much exciting—innovations to give those of us working in the film and video industry more options to choose from in the future.
