Are Handheld Filters Worth the Investment in 2025 for Your In-Camera Effects?
A look at the new Phantom and Spectre handheld filters from Prism Lens FX and an exploration into what they might be able to offer for your cinematography styles and looks.

Prism Lens FX Handheld Filters
In the film and video industry, there are a million ways to add effects to your shots these days. And while there will always be plenty of options to try out in post-production, there is always something to be said about in-camera effects and how natural and realistic they can appear.
Yet, while they aren’t usually too pricey, they do require an investment. Let’s look at these new Phantom and Spectre handheld filters from Prism Lens FX and explore if they might be worth the investment for your current projects.
The Handheld Phantom FX Filter
The first of two options announced by Prism Lens FX, the Phantom handheld filter is a cool Phantom FX filter that can create a ghosting motion blur. This “slow shutter” effect is created right in your camera when the filter is held directly in front of your lens.
What’s neat about these handheld filters is their handheld design, which allows you to dodge it in front of your lens and enable the exact look that you’re going for—as well as plenty of fun for trial and error.
Here are some of the main specs:
- Creates a double-sided ghosting motion blur / slow shutter effect
- Includes 1/4-20 threaded hole for mounting
- Available in 2 sizes
- Available in 2 strengths
Price: $169 - $189
The Handheld Spectre FX Filter
The other option announced by Prism Lens FX is a new Spectre handheld FX filter, which features a unique design where it is able to maintain the center subject in perfect focus while the four outer edges of the glass are able to create a ghosting motion blur effect.
Similar to the Phantom option, the Spectre is also a handheld design that allows users to author their images. You’ll have full control to dodge, move, and manipulate the exact effect that you’re going for. The handle also features 1/4-20 if you prefer to mount instead.
Here are some of the main specs:
- The Handheld Spectre FX is made of 4 sections and a flat, clear center - this allows you to create a motion blur ghosting effect around your center frame's subject.
- Includes 1/4-20 threaded hole for mounting
- Available in 2 sizes (100mm & 150mm)
Price: $169 - $189
Both the Phantom and the Spectre handheld filters are available for pre-order now, with shipments expected to start sending out in 10-12 weeks for all sizes. You can find out more info on Prism Lens FX’s website here.
