We all knew things would heat up eventually, though, and with news of new Nikon Z-mount versions of some of RED’s more powerful cameras already announced, Nikon has also shared that they are releasing the company’s first Power Zoom lens for its FX format.
Let’s look at this new NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ Lens and explore how it’s been tailored to be a videographer’s workhorse option to partner with some of Nikon’s full-frame mirrorless cameras like the company’s flagship Z9, Z8, and Z6 III.
NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ Lens
Designed as an all-in-one lens aimed at the professional video market, the NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ Lens’ broad focal range, internal focusing mechanism, and short minimum focusing distance should help make it a solid option for all types of run-and-gun videography work.
Fumiko Kawabata, Sr. VP of Marketing and Planning, Nikon said, “There is a long history of professional cinematographers in Hollywood and beyond using NIKKOR lenses to bring their vision to life, and the new NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ builds upon this legacy, going a step further to provide exceptional versatility, meeting the needs for today’s solo filmmakers.”
This new lens also marks the company's first power zoom made for their FX-format sensors and is designed to be an ideal partner to go with the company’s flagship Z9 mirrorless camera. Nikon shares that the lens has been crafted for professionals and will provide a broad focal range for framing versatility.
A Powerful Power Zoom
The lens further features an internal zoom mechanism that allows comfortable zooming without shifts in the center of gravity and a short minimum focusing distance of 13.4" when working up close to your subjects.
Plus, with Nikon's best anti-reflection coating, Meso Amorphous Coat, ghosting, and flare are significantly reduced in the lens's images. The lens will also use a stepping motor (STM) to allow for speedy and quiet autofocus adjustment with suppressed focus breathing.
For working with the Nikon Z9 in particular, Hi-Res Zoom can be used, allowing an angle of view equivalent to that of the 270mm focal length with 4K video recording. Eleven zoom speeds are also available for selection and can be assigned to the zoom lever or one of the paired camera's Fn buttons.
