For all of you loyal Canon cinema camera shooters out there, Christmas is coming early as Canon is rolling out a host of firmware updates that are set to add some powerful new features and functions to several of the company’s top Cinema EOS cameras.

The biggest winner here is going to be the C400, as it is set to get full frame 3:2 open gate recording. Cameras like the C80, C70, and the R5 C are also set to get new features and display additions. Here’s what you need to know.

Canon Firmware Updates

Let’s start with the most exciting news here first, as the Canon EOS C400, a powerful 6K-capable full-frame digital cinema camera that has proven to be a great option for high-end videographers and documentary filmmakers in its own right, is getting another advanced video recording option.

Full frame 3:2 open gate video recording is coming to one of Canon’s flagship cinema camera models. A nice addition that should help keep the C400 relevant as more cameras are getting open gate these days, so this was an obvious choice for Canon to roll out—although it’s a nice bonus to get it here before the holidays.

The other big news is that the following Canon Cinema EOS cameras are getting some new features as well, with the C70 and R5 C being perhaps the biggest winners after the C400 in terms of new additions. Here’s the full list of updates announced by Canon.

  • Full Frame 3:2 open gate recording (EOS C400)
  • View Assist in MEDIA mode (EOS C80, EOS C70, EOS R5 C)
  • Enhanced Level 2 Display additions (EOS C70, EOS R5 C)
